How does it work?

I had the day off work today because i still felt like arse this morning.
Its now 3pm and i suprisingly feel a whole lot better after sleeping literally all day.
So a "Friend" of mine has recently been on a contiki tour of Europe where he met and fell in love with a Scottish girl. However he has since returned home and she is at this point in time living in London. This is what i don't understand....
They are together, they are being completely faithful to each other even though they live on completely opposite sides of the world. They skype everyday and in January she is hopefully coming here on a holiday. If they can manage it then kudos to them.
She will eventually be going to live in Korea for work. If in the near future it looked like both of them would be living in the same country let alone the same city i can totally see the point of staying together. However when both of them have commitments tying them to the place they are in now what is the point?
It is far too expensive to fly back and forth to see each other.
Whilst skype is great to keep in touch, how long can one go without the physical side of a relationship?
I do know a couple of people who have dropped everything to move across the globe to be with the one they love.
Take my Friend Kate, she met her husband to be whilst working on a cruise, he moved here from Saskatoon after the cruise ended, he now has permanent residency here in Australia, they are getting married in March and they have never been happier. This i somewhat get.
But when neither of you is willing to make that "big move" how does it work? What is the point?
Not too mention how does one of you (if you are actually going to try and make it work) leave all your family, your friends, your home for the last however long, leave pretty much your entire life behind and move so far away?!
I'm sure whoever reads this... if anyone... will say "LOVE".
But can love really fill the void of absolutely everything you leave behind?
